A Note From Karen, 19 July

19.07.18

You know when I’m asked to write the e-news note that things are busy in the Griffin house!

Lee is currently in the final week of rehearsal for The Almighty Sometimes. I cannot wait for you to see it. I loved this play when I first read it—when it was shortlisted for the Griffin Award in 2015. As a mother of two young women, this story is a poignant and beautiful portrayal of a world that so many of us navigate.

I am looking forward to seeing what Lee and the amazing team she has assembled will do with this deeply heartfelt work. (Plus, I am extremely excited to see Penny Cook back on the Stables stage in this challenging role—just you wait!). If you want an extra bit of insight into the play, this is a great interview with Brenna Harding and playwright Kendall Feaver.

From here on out, Lee goes in to rehearsal for The Misanthrope, our co-production with Bell Shakespeare. We hope to see you all down at the Opera House in September for this one—a little bit of the Griffin experience with a nice harbour view thrown in!

There is much excitement in the office this week as we sign off on the 2019 Season brochure. It is another season full of bold Australian plays that the Griffin team are very proud of, and eager to sink our teeth into. We launch the season very soon, and I am so excited to share next year’s adventures with you.

Finally, apparently there were a few awards announced this week—congratulations to all the Helpmann winners dedicated to the creation of new Australian work! I have to say, though, that it put a twinkle in my eye when we spied some Griffin nods in Time Out’s “Alternative Helpmann Awards”. We’re chuffed to be in there!

And with that, we push onward toward previews for The Almighty Sometimes. See you at the Stables!

Cheers,
Karen
