The Engine Room of Australian Storytelling

Stories about us, by us, for us.

Over the last 45 years, Griffin Theatre Company has established a small-but-mighty presence in Australia’s cultural landscape.

With a singular mission to produce exclusively Australian plays and a commitment to platform underrepresented voices, Griffin ensures our nation’s most important stories have a permanent place on our stages.

Griffin Studio

For 15 years Griffin Studio, our year-long creative lab for early career artists has provided support and mentorship to cohorts of writers seeking to make urgent and exciting work. Each year, our Studio artists develop their work with mentorship from the Griffin Artistic team, undertake workshops, connect with other artists and write, write, write.

Plays developed through Griffin Studio include City of Gold by Meyne Wyatt, Orange Thrower by Kirsty Marillier, Whitefella Yella Tree by Dylan Van Den Berg and Koreaboo by Michelle Lim Davidson, with alumni including Kate Mulvany, Sheridan Harbridge and Nathan Harrison, among many others.

In 2026, we are excited to announce our Griffin Studio cohort will also benefit from a week-long writing residency at Shark Island Kangaroo Valley.

Applications for Griffin Studio 2026 open on Monday 20 October.

Thank you to our passionate Griffin Studio donors.

Griffin Studio Workshop

Plays are living, breathing works that come to life off the page. It’s crucial that playwrights can test their work with actors and directors long before a script hits the rehearsal room. This is where Griffin Studio Workshop comes in, as an important extension of our beloved Griffin Studio.

This program gifts artists with invaluable time and space to test out their plays with actors and directors, well ahead of the rehearsal room. Previous plays that have been nurtured through the Workshop include Koreaboo by Michelle Lim Davidson, Golden Blood 黄金血液 by Merlynn Tong and Naturism by Ang Collins.

Thank you to the generosity of our Griffin Studio Workshop donors.

Commissions

In recent years, Griffin has been able to commission writers thanks to the support of our donors and select government initiatives. This opportunity to support exceptional theatremakers is the first step in getting as many new Australian plays as we can onto our stage.

Current writers under commission include: Mary Rachel Brown, Michele Lee, Jules Orcullo, Jacob Parker, Dylan Van Den Berg and Adrian Russell Wills.

Griffin Ambassadors

Since 2004, the Griffin Ambassadors program has ushered in the next generation of artists and audiences by providing season-long access to Griffin performances, exclusive workshops and connections with some of Australia’s leading theatre professionals. Year 10-12 students who are keen to become Ambassadors can get in touch at [email protected].
