In mid-July, we hosted 2026 Griffin Award & Keynote—the annual celebration of excellent Australian playwriting.

What a joy it was to celebrate this year's three finalists; Amarantha, Danish Sheikh and Vernon Pua—with Vernon taking out the title for his play 8 Hot Tips on Sharing Your Bed.

Alongside this acknowledgement of bold new playwriting, acclaimed writer, actor and director Sheridan Harbridge delivered a stirring and poignant Keynote speech.

We are delighted to share the audio recording and transcript of her vivid speech with you now.

We hope you’ll walk away from it feeling invigorated, inspired or even interested in penning your own story. Here's to many more brave and brilliant ideas.

We’re off to the Valley! ⛰️

Next week we’re ecstatic to be hosted at @sharkislandinstitute Kangaroo Valley, where this year’s Griffin Studio artists will spend a week in residence.

Across the week, Studio artists, Erica Brennan, Michael Louis Kennedy and Grace Malouf, will write, reflect, learn and write some more, navigating any creative hurdles alongside industry mentors and the Griffin artistic team. This exciting, inaugural residency marks the halfway point in the 2026 Studio.

We’re overjoyed to be supported by Shark Island Institute, a pioneer—in their own right—in groundbreaking, new storytelling.

Griffin Theatre Company is ecstatic to announce that the winner of the 2026 Griffin Award is Vernon Pua for his play, 8 HOT TIPS ON SHARING YOUR BED!

About the Play
As Sydney gears up for the Olympics, two international students, Sunny and Meng begin the year living in a cramped share-house room, sharing a single bed on alternating 12-hour shifts—no overlap, no questions, no intimacy. What begins as a practical arrangement slowly deepens into something harder to contain. As financial pressure mounts and personal truths surface, friendship blurs into desire, daring them to cross a line.

8 HOT TIPS ON SHARING YOUR BED is a tender, unsentimental two-hander about what it costs to survive and the quiet choices that shape who we become.

Join us in congratulating Vernon and all the shortlisted playwrights for this year's Award: Amarantha and Danish Sheikh and the highly commended playwright Zack Lewin.

The Griffin Award is generously supported by the @copyrightagency_'s Cultural Fund—a proud supporter of new Australian writing and the Griffin Award.

Entries for the Griffin Award 2027 open in late 2026.

On behalf of everyone here at Griffin, THANK YOU!

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, you've helped ensure that Griffin can continue giving bold new Australian stories somewhere to begin.

Every year, playwrights arrive at Griffin with a first draft or an idea they can't quite let go of. With your support, those small beginnings are given the time, space, and belief they need to grow. From first readings and workshops to rehearsals and opening nights, your generosity helps carry new work through every stage of the journey. 🎭

📜 PLAY SUBMISSIONS 🪶

Open access matters: it creates pathways for writers at any stage of their career and helps ensure our stages reflect the breadth, complexity and imagination of contemporary Australia.

To ensure every play is given the time and consideration it deserves (and to help us manage the volume of submissions), we will hold two open play submission cycles each year. The best news? The first will be Friday 2 October to Friday 9 October this year!

During these week-long windows, writers will be invited to submit full drafts of plays through an online portal. Each play will be read and feedback provided within three months by the Griffin artistic team, as well as external consultants and collaborators.

This will help us read more work with more consideration and allows us to connect with more playwrights and plays outside of our creative programs and their application processes. If you have any questions about play submissions, please get in touch through literary@griffintheatre.com.au or visit our website.

Every new Australian play starts somewhere small.

A scribbled idea, a first read-through, a workshop where something suddenly clicks.

Griffin exists to nurture those early stages. From those beginnings have come works like PRIMA FACIE by Suzie Miller, CITY OF GOLD by Meyne Wyatt and WHITEFELLA YELLA TREE by Dylan Van Den Berg—stories that started in a tiny Kings Cross theatre and went on to have big futures and national and international impact.

Join us on our journey from first draft to opening night.

If you’ve been past the new theatre site recently, you may have noticed the walls getting higher and higher 🏗️

In April, semi-trailers lined up on Nimrod Street to truck in the first pre-cast concrete panels to adorn the new building—and these ones are particularly special. The four panels mimic the design of the original barn doors that served as the entry to the SBW Stables Theatre. The cast concrete and panels were set into moulded trays with distinctive diagonal timber framing to stylise the original barn doors and will now sit in the exact same place as their predecessors, honouring its history.

"Those people that took a chance on that script so early on. the should be so proud of what they've done for our industry"

Before it was seen by millions, translated into over 30 languages and performed in over 50 countries, it began here.

Suzie Miller's PRIMA FACIE is a global phenomenon with humble beginnings in a 100-seat theatre in an old horse stable. The power of Australian theatre and stories is far reaching, something Griffin knows all too well.

We are proud to champion the fiercest, boldest Australian stories—if you were one of the 1.2 million people to see this play, thank you.
