"People don’t come to our theatre for the canapes and champagne, they come because they want to see something, rough, raw and ready. When we rebuild the space, we are not going to take the soul out of it.”

Did you catch our Artistic Director Declan Greene in the @sydneymorningherald talking all things SBW Stables Theatre redevelopment?

"Plans to be lodged with the City of Sydney this week call for demolishing the house next door, allowing for the addition of 35 seats to the 105-seat theatre, a new rehearsal room, disability access and upgraded dressing rooms including a much-needed shower for performers."

It was a captivating one-person show that premiered at Griffin in 2021, now join artist Oliver Twist for the first ever public reading of his play-turned-memoir JALI on Tuesday 14 November.

A natural-born storyteller propelled from the cold alleys of a Malawian refugee camp to the warm spotlight of the Australian stage, Twist vividly describes what it’s like to leave your homeland behind and to have to wait for your whole childhood for life to begin.

Griffin audiences were among the lucky first to hear Twist's story in 2021, where JALI wove an incredible story of resilience, family and belonging in a work that catapulted from the Stables stage to a national tour with Live Nation and even to UK shores with Soho Theatre.

Now, two years later, join us for a beautiful night to celebrate this very special launch of his brand new memoir, JALI.

We're so excited about our redevelopment! But we've got a couple of very special productions to bring to life before May next year—our Special Return Season of JAILBABY by Suzie Miller and THE LEWIS TRILOGY by Louis Nowra.

Remember Dee Dee—our beloved giant rocking horse designed by Isabel Hudson for our 2023 production of PONY by Eloise Snape?

Well—turns out Dee Dee is an in-demand star! We were thrilled to see Dee Dee gallop across state borders to feature at the @stompinggroundbeer Loading Dock Bar throughout the entirety of this year's @melbfringe.

We love seeing our set pieces reused in interesting theatrical ways! Griffin strongly advocates for the sharing and re-use of design elements across the performing arts industry. And the results are unexpected, innovative and just plain fun!

Congratulations Dee Dee—or dare we say: "Neigh!" #Griffin2023 #gtcpony

ANNOUNCING THE SUZIE MILLER AWARD

In the wake of the global success of PRIMA FACIE, Griffin is excited to announce the brand new Suzie Miller Award.

The Suzie Miller Award supports mid-career playwrights in the writing and development of daring and innovative new work.

Through the awarding of a full commission and residency at Griffin, as well as mentorship from Suzie Miller herself, the Award provides pathways towards production both within Australia and overseas. It also provides the opportunity to contribute to Griffin’s Artistic programs such as Griffin Studio and the Griffin Award.

The Suzie Miller Award is open to writers with an established practice, who have both industry recognition and a body of professionally-produced work that speaks to ‘now’—asking knotty, contemporary questions of Australia’s audiences.

Applications are officially open and close at 5pm on Wednesday 15 November. For further eligibility criteria, FAQs and more information on how to apply, please visit the Griffin website!

From Molly's monologue in BLAQUE SHOWGIRLS by Nakkiah Lui—performed with truth and heart by Angeline Penrith in Griffin's production, which just closed on Saturday.

This past week has been a challenging one for the staff, creatives and First Nations community currently working at and engaging with Griffin. At the same time, creating moments of Blak joy, audience members laughing so hard they cry and resilient togetherness through theatremaking in the wake of the referendum's result has felt radical and powerful.

To our First Nations family—we love you. We see you. We will always be here for you and we will always uplift you. ALWAYS was, ALWAYS will be.

Love,
