Griffin and ellaslist want everyone to be able to enjoy Mum Club by Jorjia Gillis—especially new parents! Join us on 2 & 10 September, plus the newly added 18 September, for a theatre event tailored for new parents at a special Babes in Arms matinee and morning tea.
Before the show, coffee and cake will provided in the foyer so you can get fuelled up before you head into the theatre to see Mum Club, with pram parking and facilities set up for parents.
Breastfeeding is, of course, welcome and house lights will be left on, with a range of noise and movement forgiven in the auditorium. However, we should note that because of the adult nature of the content, it is recommended that only babies under or around 18 months attend.
About the Show
Welcome to Mum Club.
Rule One: Every mum is held with love and kindness, no matter who they are.
Rule Two: Drink cow’s milk and you’re OUT.
Sadie’s just moved to Sydney. She’s a young Martu mum, completely fried from trying to settle a screaming baby in a rental the size of a change table.
What she needs is a support network. Instead, she stumbles into the Inner West Mum Club. There’s Corporate Mum (took a Zoom call an hour after crowning), Antivax Mum (burns sage at sleepovers) and Well-Meaning Mum (acknowledges Country every time she enters a new postcode).
They’re all Sadie’s got by way of friends. But as the pressure to “do motherhood right” cranks up to eleven, Sadie starts to question what she’s willing to compromise in order to find community.
From the mind of the luminously funny Jorjia Gillis featuring an all-star ensemble helmed by Stephanie Somerville, Mum Club is a sharp takedown of modern parenting culture—and a love letter to the messy, funny, glorious resilience of Blak motherhood.
Ticketing FAQs
Is there an age restriction on attendance?
Due to the adult nature of the content, it is recommended that only babies under or around 18 months attend.
Does my baby need a ticket?
Yes – at time of booking please indicate you are bringing your baby so we can ensure venue capacity is adhered to.
Can I bring a companion?
Yes absolutely—we understand that you may want to bring along a support person, carer and/or partner—they will however need to be ticketed.
Can I attend without a child?
No—we understand that everyone’s needs are different, however these are dedicated performances designed specifically for patrons attending with babies.
We’re suddenly unable to come—is that okay?
Yes—babies’ needs change unexpectedly. If you’re able to, please get in contact with our Box Office before the performance, but if not afterwards is fine and we’ll refund your ticket or exchange you into another performance.
Performance FAQs
What can I expect at the performance?
We hope to provide an environment that is as reassuring and stress-free as possible. We know that babies are expected to make noise or need feeding.
The performance runtime is approximately 90 minutes.
The Downstairs Theatre is general admission with bench seating, so you’ll be able to sit anywhere. There won’t be room for baby carriers on the floor, but we’ll leave enough room on the benches if you need to bring supplies in with you.
What alterations will be made to the performance?
The house lights will be kept on at a low level so that you may leave and return whenever needed. There will be an usher inside the theatre who can help you with this as the space can be a little tricky to navigate.
What other content should I expect?
While a comedy, Mum Club does touch on postnatal depression, fertility challenges and birth trauma. If you have specific concerns about this or any other content, please contact our team.
Venue FAQs
Parking
There is no onsite parking at Belvoir, but limited timed parking is available on the streets around the theatre. We recommend giving yourself plenty of time if driving is your only option.
Facilities
For these specific performances there will be pop-up baby changing facilities and breastfeeding locations, lift access and microwave access.
Pram management
Prams will have to be left in the foyer outside the theatre. We recommend not leaving valuables—there are limited secure lockers onsite.
Food & Beverage
Griffin will provide tea, coffee and cake prior to the performance. Belvoir’s bar will also be open prior to and following the performance, offering snacks and light refreshments.
