We have good news and less-good news about our June-July production of WAKE IN FRIGHT by Declan Greene & Zahra Newman!

The very good news is that WAKE IN FRIGHT co-creator and solo performer—the inimitable Zahra Newman—is having a baby!

The less-good news is that Griffin will need to re-schedule WAKE IN FRIGHT to later in the year.

Instead, we are excited to announce that WAKE IN FRIGHT will feature in the Bay 20 program at Carriageworks from 2 –19 December, with Zahra at the helm!

Find out more about the postponement via the link in our bio.

Our upcoming production of THE ELOCUTION OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN by steve j. spears represents a multitude of things—legacy, lineage and a return of Simon Burke AO back on a Griffin show! It’s particularly exciting to reflect on Simon’s career, which spans more than 50 years, on stage and screen alike.

Simon made his stage debut at the age of 12 in Michael Cove’s KOOKABURRA (1974) performed at the Nimrod Theatre (now Belvoir St Theatre) directed by Richard Wherrett (who went on to direct the the original production of THE ELOCUTION OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN in 1976.)

Simon was in the first ever Griffin Theatre Company season at the Stables in 1980 when he performed in WINTER IN AMERICA by David Mamet and Sam Shepard (dir. Kevin Jackson). He has reappeared on the Stables stage many times, most recently appearing in Declan Greene’s THE HOMOSEXUALS (2017, dir. Lee Lewis).

Long time Griffin-goers would also recognise Simon for his performances in OCTOBER by Ian Wilding (2007, dir. Julian Meyrick) and SATANGO (2004, dir. Wayne Harrison).

For such an important show to be returning to Griffin on its 50th anniversary, we’re so excited that Simon’s the one to tackle the challenge. We can’t wait for audiences old and new to experience THE ELOCUTION OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN in 2026.

Not a date to celebrate.

January 26 is the anniversary of an event in this country's history that holds pain and sadness for many. Griffin Theatre Company tells stories, creates and operates on the unceded lands of the Gadigal of the Eora Nation. We stand today, and every day, with our First Nations colleagues, artists, friends, audiences and community.

This Invasion Day/Survival Day, we encourage you to engage with First Nations events taking place around the country, including the largest community-led one-day festival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, the ever-awesome Yabun Festival.

The official artwork for Yabun 2026 is an oil painting by proud Wiradjuri and Biripi man James P. Simon.

Oh, 2016 called? Well let's pick up the phone, shall wel! 🤳

Lee Lewis was Artistic Director. We had a standout season of works: LADIES DAY by Alana Valentine, REPLAY by Phillip Kavanagh, THE LITERATI by Justin Fleming (a co-production with Bell Shakespeare), GLORIA by Benedict Andrews and TURQUOISE ELEPHANT by Stephen Carleton. We presented three new Australian works as part of Griffin Independent and collaborated for the first time with Tasmania Performs on AS WE FORGIVE by Tom Holloway and Powerhouse Youth Theatre on TRIBUNAL by Kaz Therese.

We presented the Lysicrates Prize for the second time and supported the development of nascent works such as Sheridan Harbridge's NOSFERATUTU, David William’s SMURF IN WANDERLAND, Alana Valentine’s WAYSIDE BRIDE and Phil Spencer’s THE SMALLEST HOUR.

Griffin Studio nurtured Sofya Gollan, Catherine Fargher, Heather Grace Jones, Sheridan Harbridge and Phil Spencer and the Griffin Award went to Melissa Reeves for THE ZEN OF TABLE TENNIS.

Around 27,500 theatre lovers visited the SBW Stables Theatre, showing their love for Australian stories in a thriving theatre scene.

To cap off the year we launched the 2017 Season at the National Art School to the warmest of audiences with the highest of vibes.

To say it was a successful year would be an understatement. It was an ambitious year with incredible payoff—we can't wait to shoot for new heights in 2026.

The final show of our 2026 Season is MUM CLUB hear what playwright Jorjia Gillis has to say about her work.

Jorjia Gillis
Playwright, MUM CLUB

"I wanted to find a place to put all the weird wacky traumatising, beautiful and fucked up moments that I felt when I became a new parent. The funniest things would happen in the darkest moments, and I remember thinking don't forget this! I wrote it for parents who need a good laugh, for anybody who's felt lonely and out of whack trying to fit in and failed spectacularly at it, and at the heart of Mum Club, it's for all the amazing blak women who taught me how to be a Mum."

Our second Griffin Lookout production of 2026 is LACUNA! Learn a little more about playwright Eric Jiang.

Eric Jiang
Playwright, LACUNA

"I wanted to explore how my queerness and connection to diasporic Chinese culture shape my relationship with my Mum. I wanted to do that by dreaming into beautiful, imaginative worlds, echoing the way that I yearn for my closest relationships to feel like new, beautiful ways of being are possible."
