A Note from Jimi, 16 April

16.04.26

Hey Grif-friend,

Jimi here, Griffin’s Production Manager, coming to you from Griff HQ in Kings Cross 🫡

How good’s April in Sydney?! Sunny days, clear skies, and the ocean’s still above 21°—I promise it’s warmer once you get in; you’ll have to take my word for it.

More importantly, SISTREN by Iolanthe is back onstage, after a fantastic opening night on Saturday. I can’t say it loudly enough; get! your! bum! on! a! seat! This show is already selling fast and will wait for nobody—if you didn’t see the ferocious season down the road at the Old Fitz Theatre last year, you’re just going to be sorry you missed* it (again). #sorrynotsorry
*Trans and Gender Diverse Community Night and Bla(c)k Out Night tickets are still up for grabs, but not for long grab them now!

After presenting  the original season last year, I can personally guarantee it’s every bit as powerful, energetic and fluffy as when it was part of our Griffin Lookout season, alongside Birdsong of Tomorrow by Nathan Harrison.

Speaking of Griffin Lookout, we’re about to open applications for the 2027 program, so if you and your team want to take part, applications open Monday 20 April. We’re looking for courageous and outstanding new works by early-career teams. If successful, you’ll be one of the first teams working on our newly-redeveloped Griffin Theatre stage in 2027 how exciting!

I’m not sure what my own Lookout show would entail, but it would probably look and sound like a Ryoji Ikeda installation and give the production manager (crucially, not me) a headache.

We’ve also just launched into our first week of rehearsals for SAVIOR by Happy Feraren, kindly hosted by our friends at Theatre and Performance Studies, the University of Sydney. I’ve been working closely with the creative team of SAVIOR since February to bring the set, lighting and sound elements to life, and we’re so excited to bring the show to the stage in the Downstairs Theatre at Belvoir from 16 May.

Finally, I want to take a moment to give a shoutout to the ever-generous team at Belvoir St Theatre—they’ve been very gracious hosts and have managed to make us feel so welcome, while producing their own season in the Upstairs Theatre—I couldn’t be more grateful.

All the best,
Jimi
