A Note from Christie, 23 January

Hi hi Grif-friend,

I am nervously making my Griffin debut! How are you? Are you having a good week? I’m Christie, your new Marketing and Content Producer, two weeks on the job. When my dearest grandpa asks me what I do for work, I often say, “I make videos, take photos, and write for both big and small screens.” More specifically to you, I’ll help put together this email you read every fortnight and Griffin’s social media posts.

While we are in the midst of social media collapse (a.k.a. the Great Tiktok Ban and Rednote Migration), I often have to remind myself why I like to make things for big and small screens. Accessibility. Turning hard-to-understand concepts into something simpler and easier to digest, all via digital media. How great is that!

Earlier this week, I was busy editing interviews with the incredible Nucleus team: writer Alana Valentine, director Andrea James and Griffin Artistic Director Declan Greene. I want to share some quotes that might not make it into the final videos so you can share my excitement for Nucleus, too!

“I interviewed some really passionate pro-nuclear activists and then some absolutely hysterically, passionately anti-nuclear activists. And I noticed similarities between them, and I started to understand that that sort of level of passion was something so similar that they were actually approaching the topic in a really similar way. And I wanted to look at what it’s like to get old with a hatred.”—Alana Valentine

“While Australia is debating the pros and cons of nuclear energy, Alana is asking us to look at it in a completely different, fresh, and ultimately surprising way. She’s actually asking us to take a stand, but to also consider what you need to lose [and] hold onto your passionate beliefs.”—Andrea James

“It’s obviously a really topical play, but it’s not just an issues play. It’s also about the impossibility of maintaining ideological purity and the messiness of love and life and human interaction that gets in the way.”—Declan Greene

Well, that’s all the quotes I have for now! I hope this has given you a little insight into the Nucleus. Back to my point about simplifying big ideas, I can’t paraphrase a play (I don’t ever plan to), but if I could convince just one person to attend a show with one of my ideas then I’m stoked.

I look forward to making more things tailored for big and small screens at Griffin!

Wishing you a restful night,
Christie
